The Unique Ecosystem of Gir harbours about 38 Species of Mammals, 37 Species of Reptiles ,around 300 Species of birds and more than 2000 Species of insects.
The main carnivours of the gir are Asiatic lion,Leopard,jungle cat hyaena,jackal,ratel,desert,cat and the civet cat.
The main herbivours of the gir are the chital, nilgai,sambar,four-horned antelop,chinkara and wild boar. The single largest population of marsh Crocodile in the Country.
Some of the typical Birds of Gir are crested Serpent Eagle,King Vultures, Woodpecker, Bush Quail, Brown Fish Owl ,Crest Swift and the Indian Pitta. Gir is a bird watcher`s delight.

Gir is also a great Place to Intract with Local Tribes. The main Tribe is a Nomadic Pastoral community called “Maldhari”. They live in small hutments called “Nesses” in the forest area. Gir is also home to a Negroid community known as “Siddis” Who are african in Origin but speaks Gujarati.
The Gir National Park is open from mid-october onwards till mid-june & The Devaliya Safari Park is open througout the year (wed. closed). |
